Give Me Space
By removing a dividing wall between the kitchen and dining room, the original dining space was incorporated into the kitchen floorplan. The kitchen floor plan was enhanced by moving the doorway, between the foyer to the kitchen, over 10 inches to provide protective coverage for active little people from the new stand-up desk and relocating the laundry room door from the kitchen to the future dining room.
Careful planning allowed for the strategic placement of appliances such as the wall ovens near the baking center in the kitchen island, the exhaust hood on a wall that afforded the shortest- most direct duct run to the exterior of the home, the warming drawer next to the dining room and immediately behind the cooktop, the microwave away from the cook's activities 'in the snack zone', the dishwasher next to the sink to take advantage of existing plumbing and wiring, the beverage fridge in the china hutch for easy access to beverages from the dining table, the fridge and freezer situated between the sink and snack zone for dual purpose access, and lastly the Urban Cultivator (a hydroponic growing box) located near the kitchen sink but also next to existing water supply and waste lines from the former island prep sink.
The judicious use of a wide variety of cabinet convenience hardware, including a magic corner, pull-out knife block, base chef's pantry, three pull-out pantries, a mixer lift, and base roll-out shelves helps keep the kitchen storage organized and easily accessible which also helps keep countertops clutter free. Incorporating an 18" deep beverage fridge into the china hutch ensured ample space for the dining table.
To improve the lighting, a skylight was installed over the kitchen's main sink (complete with remote control), dimmable pendant lights were placed over the island, lighting inside the glass door cabinetry and undercounter lights all help provide the right illumination for every task and mood.
Hardwood floors were refinished and stained to compliment the room's new color palette.
