Remodeling a Masterbath with Chemical Sensitivity in Mind

If Cinderella had been a bathroom, this remodel project was the ultimate glass slipper. The victim of poor design and maintenance, the room lacked privacy and suffered from deteriorating sheet rock, poor indoor air quality as well as cleaning and maintenance problems. To compound these issues, the Homeowner suffers from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities therefore the number one goal of the project was to select high durability, low maintenance materials that did not off-gas during or after construction and did not require toxic cleansers or sealers for cleaning and maintenance. This was achieved by using no/low Voc paints and glues, biodegradable linoleum flooring, FSC wood cabinetry and solid surface materials. The secondary goal was to provide more counter space for daily grooming as well as storage for linens, toiletries and a concealed laundry hamper. Lastly, one of the Homeowner's favorite forms of relaxation is a long soak in a hot bath, hence the tub became a focal point of this NW Contemporary themed bathroom project. "Thanks to Molly's expertise and creativity, we were able to turn a completely dysfunctional space into a glorious bathroom retreat. She respected our priorities and budget while giving us professionally managed advice and choices. The finished room is amazing. For days after the project was complete, I kept opening the bathroom door and peeking in to see if it was really still there — I just can't believe it's truly our bathroom!" ~ Anne W., Homeowner
